Planning a family trip to Eilat? Reserve an evening to step away from the city lights and experience the famous dark skies of the South with a private stargazing tour in Eilat!
As Israel’s vacation capital, Eilat offers endless entertainment: luxury hotels with inviting pools, indulgent meals at top chef restaurants, and tax-free shopping along the promenade and its many malls. But beyond these man-made wonders, Eilat is surrounded by mesmerizing desert nature. After hiking the stunning canyons of the Eilat Mountains and swimming with dolphins in the Red Sea, come finish your day under the sparkling canopy of the desert night sky.
About the Location
The primary sources of light pollution here are the Jordanian settlements along the Edom Mountains to the east and, of course, the glow from Eilat itself. A short 30-minute drive north along Route 12 places the Eilat Mountains between you and the city, providing reasonable cover from light pollution. This creates comfortable stargazing conditions that will surely impress anyone used to the light-polluted skies of Central and Northern Israel.
Sky Conditions in Eilat
While light pollution from the city (with a Bortle scale of 3 to 4) and Jordan does limit the visibility of deep-space objects near the southern and eastern horizons, our observation sites outside the city provide surprisingly dark skies. You will enjoy fantastic views of celestial objects closer to the zenith that are guaranteed to leave new observers in awe.
For those driving down to Eilat, we highly recommend stopping for a stargazing session in Mitzpe Ramon for the absolute best sky conditions. However, if you are flying into Eilat or simply don’t have an extra night to spare, you can still enjoy a high-quality evening of stargazing without giving up the comforts and amenities of the city.
